Service Blueprints For a New Library Management System

Library management systems (LMS) are the integrated software packages that libraries use to manage their purchasing, cataloging, checkouts, inventory control, journal subscriptions, and more. In order to prepare for a migration to a new LMS I interviewed staff from different areas of the library to both see what the library would need from a new system but also to talk through those requirements with vendors.

The library wanted to produce something other than a request for proposals for this project. Producing service blueprints let the library explore project requirements in a way that provided context for everyone involved in the project—even library staff themselves, who don’t often have chances to learn much about what other people in the library do.
